Why Study in New Zealand

New Zealand offers internationally recognised qualifications. It also provides a safe and welcoming environment for international students.

Depending on your visa conditions, you may be able to work while studying. Some qualifications may also support a post-study work pathway.

For the right student, study can become the first step toward skilled employment and residence in New Zealand. However, immigration and education settings have changed significantly in recent years.

Do not choose a course based on old advice. Check the current rules before you enrol.

Choosing Where to Study

New Zealand offers different study environments.

  • Auckland: A large, diverse city with broad course and employment options.
  • Wellington: A compact capital city with strengths in government, business, creative industries and technology.
  • Christchurch: A growing centre for engineering, construction, health, technology and business.
  • Dunedin: A student-focused city with a strong university environment.
  • Hamilton: A regional education and employment centre with links to agriculture, science and business.
  • Regional locations: Smaller communities may offer different lifestyle, accommodation and employment conditions.

You also need to compare provider types.

  • Universities: Usually focus on academic and professional degrees.
  • Polytechnics: Often provide practical, technical and applied programmes.
  • Private training establishments: May offer targeted vocational and professional courses.

Where you study can affect post-study work eligibility and future residence options. Choose the course, provider and location with your long-term migration pathway in mind.

Understanding NZQA Levels

New Zealand’s qualifications sit within the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework. NZQA maintains the framework and supports quality assurance across many education providers.

The framework has ten levels. The level reflects the expected knowledge, skills and complexity of the qualification.

In simple terms:

  • Lower levels generally cover foundation and certificate study.
  • Middle levels may include certificates, diplomas and applied training.
  • Level 7 may include bachelor’s degrees, graduate certificates and graduate diplomas.
  • Higher levels include honours, postgraduate, master’s and doctoral qualifications.

The level matters because post-study work eligibility generally depends on completing a qualification at Level 7 or higher. Other qualifications may qualify only if they meet specific current requirements.

Check the qualification level, study duration, delivery location and eligibility before accepting an offer.

Entry Requirements

Confirm these points before applying:

  • An offer of place from an approved New Zealand education provider.
  • English language proficiency suitable for the course.
  • Academic entry requirements for the selected programme.
  • Evidence of genuine intentions to study.
  • Sufficient funds for tuition and living costs.
  • A realistic plan for funding future study and living expenses.
  • Health and character evidence, where required.
  • Appropriate medical and travel insurance for the study period.

Your education provider may also have additional entry requirements. These can include portfolios, interviews, work experience or subject prerequisites.

The Application Process, Step by Step

  1. Shortlist courses and institutions. Compare entry requirements, qualification levels, location, cost and future work options.
  2. Apply to the provider. Submit academic records, English evidence and other required documents.
  3. Receive an offer of place. Review the course details, study dates and conditions carefully.
  4. Accept the offer. Pay any required deposit or tuition amount according to the provider’s instructions.
  5. Arrange insurance. Confirm that the policy meets the provider’s and New Zealand requirements.
  6. Meet health and character requirements. Arrange medical checks or police certificates if required.
  7. Prepare funds evidence. Show how tuition, living costs, travel and family expenses will be covered.
  8. Prepare the student visa application. Address genuine study intentions and provide consistent supporting documents.
  9. Lodge the application. Submit the application through the current Immigration New Zealand process.
  10. Prepare for arrival. Organise accommodation, travel, enrolment, insurance and pre-departure documents.

New Zealand Student Visa Essentials

A New Zealand student visa application normally requires:

  • An offer of place from an approved provider.
  • Evidence of funds for tuition and living costs.
  • Evidence of genuine intentions to study.
  • Health and character evidence, where applicable.
  • Acceptable medical and travel insurance.
  • Evidence supporting your study and travel plans.

For detailed visa information, read our existing New Zealand student visa and pathway visa guide.

The correct visa depends on your circumstances, course, provider, study length and family situation. A visa is not guaranteed because you have received an offer of place.

What It Costs

Plan for several categories of cost:

  • Tuition fees.
  • Accommodation and living costs.
  • Medical and travel insurance.
  • Visa application charges.
  • Travel to New Zealand.
  • English language testing.
  • Document certification and translation.
  • Course materials and daily transport.

Costs vary by qualification level, institution, city, course duration and lifestyle.

Do not rely on an old blog post or informal estimate. Confirm tuition with the education provider. Confirm visa charges and financial requirements with Immigration New Zealand.

Working While You Study

Some international students may be permitted to work part-time during their course. Full-time work may be permitted during scheduled holidays.

Work rights depend on the conditions attached to your particular visa. Some students may have no work rights.

Check your eVisa or visa approval letter before accepting employment. Do not rely on work income until you have confirmed that you are allowed to work and understand the limits.

After You Graduate

Your study-to-work pathway should be assessed before you enrol.

The Post-Study Work Visa may be available after completing an eligible qualification at Level 7 or higher. For many degree-level pathways, the study must be completed full-time in New Zealand for the required minimum period, currently 30 weeks. A Level 7 Graduate Diploma pathway may also depend on holding a bachelor’s degree and meeting additional requirements.

Immigration New Zealand has also announced a new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa for some graduates who do not qualify for the longer Post-Study Work Visa. Eligibility and commencement details must be confirmed against current Immigration New Zealand information.

After graduation, the usual planning sequence is:

  1. Complete an eligible qualification.
  2. Apply for an appropriate post-study or graduate work visa.
  3. Obtain skilled employment.
  4. Assess residence options.

The Green List may provide a residence pathway for specific in-demand occupations:

  • Tier 1 roles: May support a Straight to Residence application if all requirements are met.
  • Tier 2 roles: May support a Work to Residence application after the required period of employment, currently 24 months in many cases.

The occupation, qualification, registration, employer and work conditions must be checked against the current Green List.

The Skilled Migrant Category and Green List residence guide explains the broader options. You can also review the Accredited Employer Work Visa guide.

These are pathways to assess. They are not guarantees of a visa, employment or permanent residency.

Study and Family

Whether your partner or dependent children can receive visas based on your study depends on your qualification level and current New Zealand settings.

Family members generally have their own visa applications and conditions. Their work and study rights may differ from yours.

Confirm the current rules with Immigration New Zealand before assuming that family can be included or that a partner can work.
